Special K Product Review – and a question

I really debated about writing this post. Does a product review have a proper place on a cooking/baking site? I couldn’t decide. I personally like reading product reviews on other sites. I love hearing about new foods and getting a true opinion of different products that I may not have tried. But I also don’t want to dilute the content of my site. If you are coming here looking for a tried and true recipe, and instead find food that came straight out of a box, will you leave disappointed? I’d love to hear the opinion of the food blog world about this subject. Product reviews – good or bad?

In the meantime, I happened to love both of these products, so I’m going to go ahead and review them. Foodbuzz offered me the chance to try two new Special K products, and since I love trying new things (and I love free food), I jumped at the chance. They sent Special K lowfat granola and Special K blueberry fruit crisps.

The fruit crisps taste great. They’re sweet and crispy and taste a little bit like a pop-tart, but more “dessert-like”. Mike loves them (he loves blueberry anything), and I had to physically take the last pouch from him so that I could take a picture of them.

The granola was also very good. I love granola of any sort, so I’m not too hard to please. I like this so much, that I’ve actually only let Mike have one small bowl of it so far. He can finish off a box of cereal in 2 days, so I’m trying to make this box stick around a little longer. The granola is sweet and crunchy (and a tiny bit chewy) and full of healthy things like protein and fiber. I’ve been eating it every day for lunch, and it’s been a nice change from my normal lunches.

Final thoughts: I really like both of these. However, I do like to make most of our food at home, and don’t often buy products like this (I’d rather make my own granola). I don’t think either of these will make it onto our regular grocery menu, but when we need something quick, or a treat for a long trip, etc., I’d definitely buy either one of these products.

Has anyone else tried these? What did you think? What is your opinion of product reviews in general?

  1. I still haven't make my own granola like you but want to try it badly! One of these days I will. Thanks for this review. I also like to know what other people think about certain products that I haven't tried yet. 🙂

  2. I'm with you and like to try to make things last as long as possible – especially something as good as free granola!

  3. I got the samples from Foodbuzz too and my 2 year old ate all the crisps within 24 hours! Well, I'm sure my husband helped him but I didn't even get to try them. 🙁

I don't mind product reviews. A lot of times I'm skeptical of trying new products so it's nice to see reviews.

  4. I've been wanting to try some of their products (not the granola stuff, cuz I make my own too) but those crisps look interesting. I say that this blog has to do w/ food and maybe people want to see more recipes than reviews, but in all honesty, I sometimes don't want to spend the money on something until someone else does first and then tells me about it. But also, not every makes everything they eat homemade, so it's ok to do this every once in a while. I do it for bakeries and restaurants I go to if it really knocks my socks off, so why not?

  5. I just posted a review on my blog this morning! I like the crisps, but they aren't very filling, which kind of annoys me.

  6. Good blog. Food reviews? Bleh!

  7. My personal opinion is that you should do what you want to. Readers that do not want to read product reviews can skip reading on that day. You have such great recipes that I doubt you will lose readers that do not want product reviews. I like hearing what others say about the products, unless it sounds fake (which yours doesn't btw.)

  8. Thanks for your feedback everyone! 🙂

  9. whatmegansmaking today is a pact with the devil.

careful with your fine china, pat robertson foresees some shifting plates in your future.

  10. I think that reviews are fine so long as you clearly label it as such. I usually skip reviews (not sure why I read this one, but I did!), so I like to see a title that clearly says REVIEW OF WHATEVER PRODUCT that way I don't waste my time if I'm not interested. Which was exactly what you did today, so I vote that reviews are fine. 🙂

  11. And I agree with Crystal…you should do what you want to do. If that means some reviews, then so be it. I don't really get into the "review only" type blogs (just not my thing), but I do enjoy reading them occasionally on the blog that I like to read.

Anyway…I bought the Fruit Crisps and thought they were pretty good. And yes, much like a (grown up) "pop tart". More delicate, but definitely crisper. I'll probably get them again.

  12. Hi Megan,
Thank you so much for the platters & coupons( received the box in the mail yesterday)!
On the review of a product….this is definitely a win-win situation for the manufacturer, free advertisement where it will be noted by thousands, and if you do happen to like the product, then good for you too!Megan, you do a wonderful job though of taking pictures and doing the write up. Sometimes I feel that the manufacturers should pay us for our honesty and our time!I just did one for the Cheeca, only thing is that our friend owns this resort and we can go there for free whenever we want!

  13. Nazarina – So glad you got the platters and coupons! I use those platters all the time 🙂 Thanks for your well thought out response as well 🙂

  14. I love seeing an occasional review as well.

I've been meaning to try both of these and I def will now! thanks!
