Homemade Oreos

These were so fun to make. I found the recipe on Tasty Kitchen (my new favorite recipe site). I love the idea of a homemade version of such a classic cookie. And the verdict from everyone that tried them was that they taste even better than traditional oreos.

ย The cookie part is nice and semi-crunchy and chocolate flavored. The creme part is softer and creamier than an oreo, and (I think) better tasting. ๐Ÿ™‚ They were quick to make and fun to experiment with. The cookie dough spreads out a lot, to make nice thin cookies. I didn’t realize that for the first batch, so some of my oreos were huge. Mike liked those. Everyone seemed to really like these, and the novelty of a homemade oreo is a lot of fun.

Ingredients:

1-ยผ cup All-purpose Flour
ยฝ cups Unsweetened Dutch Process Cocoa Powder
ยผ teaspoons Baking Powder
1 teaspoon Baking Soda
ยผ teaspoons Salt
1-ยฝ cup Sugar
1-ยผ stick Room Temperature, Unsalted Butter
1 whole Large Egg
ยผ cups Room Temperature, Unsalted Butter
ยผ cups Vegetable Shortening
2 cups Confectioner's Sugar
2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees with 2 racks in the middle of the oven.

In an electric mixer, thoroughly mix the flour, cocoa, baking soda and powder, salt, and sugar. On low speed, add the butter, then the egg. Mix until dough forms a mass.

Using a mini ice cream scoop, fill the scoop with batter, then place batter on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Leave approximately 2 inches between cookies. With damp hands, flatten the half balls of dough slightly. Bake for 9 minutes, rotating once for even baking. Set baking sheets on a rack to cool.

To make the cream, place butter and shortening in mixer. On low speed, gradually beat in the sugar and vanilla. Turn mixer on high for 2-3 minutes until filling is light and fluffy.

To make the sandwich cookies, fit a pastry bag with a 1/2 inch round tip and pipe blobs of cream onto the center of one cookie. Place another cookie of similar size on top of the cream. Lightly press together to work the filling to the edges of the cookie. Continue until all cookies have been made.

  1. I don't care where you put the recipes as long as I get to eat them ๐Ÿ™‚ These oreos were awesome!

  2. I'd say keep everything together. Why do I not get to eat the oreo's?

  7. Hi Megan, your blog was featured today on the Foodie BlogRoll so I thought I would drop by and say hello. I have a niece by the same name except she spells hers Meghan. I like your husband rating scale. It's right on.

My husband adores Oreos and I had no idea you could make your own. Wait until he sees this. Thanks.

  9. WOw those look so good!! Kind of like mini whoopie pies! I organize a holiday cookie swap and just started looking for a recipe to make (I know, a bit early)… this would be a good one! ๐Ÿ™‚

  10. Jess – these would be a great choice for a cookie swap! But I should let you know that they aren't soft and cakey like whoopie pies, the cookie part is harder, more like an actual oreo. But I think they are better than whoopie pies ๐Ÿ™‚ Let me know if you try them!
