Sandwich Buns

There’s just something about homemade bread that makes it taste so much better than anything you can buy in a store, and these sandwich buns are no exception. They’re delicious.  Soft and slightly sweet, these buns are perfect for pretty much any type of sandwich. And the best part? They actually look like hamburger buns! (yes, I realize that’s the point, but I was pretty proud of myself for how cute they were!)

These buns are so simple to make. I’ve already made them 3 times in the last month (apparently we eat a lot of sandwiches around here).  So far, we’ve had them with meatballs, french dip sandwiches, sloppy joes, lunch meat, and the next batch is planned for hamburgers! They’re so easy to make that it just seems a shame to drive to the store and pay money for packaged hamburger buns that really just don’t compare in taste or texture. Plus these are half whole wheat, so they’re healthy!

Mike loves these. For the taste of course, but also for the novelty. He kept saying “I didn’t even know you could make homemade hamburger buns!” I’m glad I could impress my husband with something so simple. 🙂

Beautiful Burger Buns

Ingredients:

3/4 to 1 cup lukewarm water
2 tablespoons butter
1 large egg
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups unbleached All-Purpose Flour
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 tablespoon instant yeast

Directions:

Mix and knead all of the dough ingredients—by hand, mixer, or bread machine—to make a soft, smooth dough. Cover the dough, and let it rise for 1 hour, or until it's doubled in bulk. Gently deflate the dough, and divide it into 10 pieces. Shape each piece into a round 1" thick (more or less); flatten to about 3" across. Place the buns on a lightly greased baking sheet, cover, and let rise for about an hour, until very puffy.

Brush buns lightly with egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon water), and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in a preheated 375°F oven for 12 to 15 minutes, till golden. Cool on a rack.

  2. Yum! I gotta make this! Great idea!

  3. One of those things that I keep sayin' I'm gonna do, but don't! These look wonderful…you've inspired me (and maybe I'll follow through this time). 🙂

  4. Looks delicious. can you freeze these afterwards and pull them out when you need them?

  5. Traci – Yes, you can definitely freeze them. I've frozen every batch and taken out a few at a time as we want them. I just throw them in a freezer bag and haven't had any problems. I've only ever left them in there for a week or two though – we eat them too quickly!

  6. I have been wanting to try these..they look lovely

  7. Love that you made these whole wheat! I need to try my hand at them.

  8. Great recipe! I just made a loaf of homemade bread yesterday and it makes SUCH a difference when eating it!

  9. I seriously think you make the best recipes ever!

  10. French dip sandwiches are coming to the Fowler house in the near future, and we will definitely try these!

  11. Now that the kids are gone, I probably won't make this recipe-but I sure wish I had done it when they were home. For some reason I made other breads, but never buns.

  12. These look wonderful! I will have to try them, my kids love rolls.

  13. These look spectacular. I love making homemade bread, and have been contemplating making some mini hamburger rolls for sliders… This looks like a great recipe to try!

  14. I really want to try these, they look delicious. Is the recipe really as easy as throwing all the ingredients into a bowl and mixing together?

  15. Michelle – They really are pretty easy. And yes, you just mix everything (with your dough hook, or by hand) until it forms a soft smooth dough. The rest of it is just waiting for it to rise! So good and so worth it. Let me know if you try them 🙂

  16. I did try them, however, they didn't seem to rise. I'm not sure what I did wrong, I really just threw everything into the bowl and mixed it in the Kitchen Aid. i will definitely try them once more and see what happens. BTW, I use your recipes all the time! I found your blog through Tastespotting- I think you cook very similiar to the way I cook so I'm pretty happy about that! And, I like that you have pictures.

  17. Michelle – hmm…not sure what could have happened. Did you use instant yeast? If you used regular active dry, you have to dissolve it in the water for 5-10 minutes first to activate it. The only other thing I can think of is that maybe you didn't let it rise long enough? It can take longer if your house isn't very warm. Other than that I'm not sure. One of my friends had a similar problem with the recipe, but she's going to try them again as well. Let me know if you figure it out or if you have other questions! It's a King Arthur Flour recipe, too, so you can always call their bakers hotline with questions – they're great.

And thank you for your kind words! Your comment made my day! (other than my recipe not working out well for you). 🙂

  18. Wow! These were sooooo easy and they worked! I was stoked to try them out. Mine weren't very pretty, but I suspect if I made them again they might look better. We made bean burgers from Backseat Gourmet's blog to serve with them- http://backseatgourmet.blogspot.com/2010/03/bean-burgers-yum.html=\. Delish!

  19. Erin – I'm so glad you liked them! Thanks so much for stopping back to let me know (sorry I missed your comment for so long – got lost in my email!)

  20. I tried making these twice and they did not turn out well. But the description of these sounded so yummy that I was determined to make them well. So after talking with King Arthur's online help, I found out I hadn't kneaded them long enough. So today I let my mixer knead the dough for 10 minutes. The rolls came out fluffy and wonderful! Thanks for another winning recipe!

  21. Amanda – I'm glad they finally worked out for you! Isn't KAF online help a wonderful thing? Thanks for letting me know you liked them 🙂
